Marble Falls Independent School District children in Kindergarten through the sixth grade wanting to play youth football have until June 13 to register with Marble Falls Youth Football and Cheer.

Cost is $250 and individuals can register online here. Players will have a uniform fitting at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 14 and June 25, at First Baptist Church of Marble Falls.

MFYFC vice president Eric Graff noted a slight registration cost increase because it includes the fee to participate in Mustang Football Camp July 21-25 hosted by the Marble Falls High School football program where players will go through agility and conditioning.

Graff said the camp is part of the organization’s normal schedule before practices begin July 28 with pads.

Graff emphasized the organization doesn’t want cost to keep children away from playing.

“We have lots of sponsors in regards to wanting to sponsor a kid,” he said. “(Parents) are encouraged to reach out and submit an application. We have plenty of people in the community who sponsor, and we have more sponsors than kids. I don’t know if we’ve denied an application.”

The goal is to have between 20-25 players on each roster that includes Kindergarten-second grade, third and fourth grade, fifth grade and sixth grade teams.

“If we could have between 100 to 125 (players), we’d be in a really good spot,” Gauff said. “If we try to do a little less, by the end of the season we saw we were lacking kids.”

Before the season begins, coaches must obtain certifications from USA Football where they learn the proper ways to teach the basics and fundamentals of the sport. That includes the proper ways to tackle, block and even how to jump and land correctly so the athletes know the right ways to play and lessen the possibilities of injuries.

Graff said the organization’s leaders and coaches believe “the earlier we can get the kids to learn,” the better off they’ll be as they move on from youth football.

“All are super important,” he said. “All of our coaches go through USA Football requirements.”

The organization also has worked closely with Marble Falls Independent School District football head coach Keri Timmerman to learn his playbook and basic schemes in an effort to implement as much of those plays as possible. That way the athletes have some familiarity when they get into the seventh grade.

“One of the big pushes we make,” Graff said. “We want to filter down the play calls and offensive and defensive schemes. Obviously high school, middle school and youth football are different things. But we’re working on it. It’s definitely not easy. We’re trying to teach some basic stuff.”

Overall, Graff said organization leaders and coaches are looking forward to another productive year on the gridiron.

“Our program is growing,” he said. “We’re excited for the community and what football does.”
